The lotus grows in still water, roots deep in the mud, entirely indifferent to where it came from. There is something in that I find worth making. I have drawn the lotus more times than I can count — on plates, bowls, lily pad forms, mug sides — and it never feels repeated. Each piece catches a different moment: the closed bud, the open bloom, the wide flat leaf, the spent pod. The flower that begins in the dark and ends in the light.
