FeaturedThe lotus grows in still water, roots deep in the mud, entirely indifferent to where it came from. There is something in that I find worth making. I have drawn the lotus more times than I can count — on plates, bowls, lily pad forms, mug sides — and it never feels repeated. Each piece catches a different moment: the closed bud, the open bloom, the wide flat leaf, the spent pod. The flower that begins in the dark and ends in the light.
These are the first pieces. Hand-built, uneven, and entirely honest. A tool roll laid out on a table. A spread of early experiments in bold colour and unexpected combinations — always curious to know what it would look like once fired. The moments of curiosity. Kept here because every piece made today grew out of something that looked exactly like this. . These images are the before — before the wheel found its rhythm, before the glaze palette settled, before Redcocoon knew what it was.
There is a particular freedom in glazing by brushstroke — no template, no predictable outcome. The hand moves, the colour lands where it lands, and then the kiln takes over. What comes out belongs partly to the making and partly to the fire. Every piece that goes in is a small act of trust, and that anticipation never gets old. It looks effortless. It takes practice to make it so.
A dot and a line are the first marks any hand learns to make. On paper they are predictable. On pottery, applied with a moving brush or a tool pressed into wet clay, they become something else entirely — each one slightly different from the last, thick where the hand lingered, thin where it lifted away. Nothing here is measured. Everything is intentional.
Colour, committed to. No pattern, no decoration — just deep, committed glazes applied with conviction and a single highlight that catches the light. These pieces are proof that a well-chosen colour, on a well-thrown form, needs nothing else.
Crochet has always felt like a kindred craft — thread doing what clay does, building something intricate from almost nothing, entirely by hand. A family friend gave me a few handmade crochet mug covers years ago, and on a whim I pressed one into wet clay to see what it would leave behind. The impression it made was immediate and beautiful. That moment became a technique I have returned to again and again — pressing lace into clay, letting one handmade thing carry the memory of another.
Not everything made at Redcocoon belongs on a table. These butterflies and birds are made by hand, glazed with the same care as every functional piece, and made to live on a wall or on a coffee table. Small, considered works that bring a little of the studio’s language into a different kind of space.
Clay remembers everything pressed into it. A newborn’s foot. A grandparent’s hand. A dog’s paw. A family gathered at a particular moment in time. A city being left behind, painted with the places that made it home. These memorabilia pieces hold what photographs almost do — fixed in stoneware, fired to last, made to keep.
The thaachiya takes its name from the Sinhala words for hopper pan — appa, meaning hoppers (or aappa in Tamil), and thaachiya, meaning pan or wok. Wide and shallow with two small handles, built for the heat of an open flame. In a Tamil-speaking household, that same pan is known as the aappa chatti. Reinterpreted in stoneware, the thaachi moves beyond its origins without forgetting them. The form is the same — wide, low, two handles — but the use is no longer fixed. At home on any table, anywhere in the world.
These hand made lamps are thrown, pierced, and glazed at the studio, each hole cut by hand into the clay before it hardens. When the flame is lit, the light finds every opening and throws its own pattern onto the walls around it. Others are made to hang — decorative wall pieces, glazed and detailed, that bring the studio’s language into a space without needing a flame at all. Functional, considered, and quietly beautiful in the dark or the light.
The studio goes festive once a year. The Christmas collection arrives in limited quantities each November — plates painted with baubles and Santa hats, dotted tableware, board games, mugs drawn with the ornaments of the season. The palette is never fixed — some years warm, some years unexpected — but the care that goes into every piece is always the same. Just with a little more joy in the glaze.
These tic-tac-toe sets — board and playing pieces all made by hand at the studio — are among the most joyful things to come out of the kiln. Functional in the simplest, most human way.
